The kick-off event on Low-Carbon Transport Futures in Zambia, held July 11, 2023, saw the participation of government institutions, transport stakeholders and industry professionals. The event was inaugurated by Mr. John Chilube, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, and Mr. Holger Dalkmann, a senior advisor from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Climate Compatible Growth. Mr. Chilube emphasized the importance of collaboration and engagement with local stakeholders in shaping policies and strategies that align with the community’s needs, while Mr. Dalkmann expressed optimism about the positive outcomes resulting from the project’s data collection and collaborative efforts.
The project focuses on mapping Lusaka’s public transport system while evaluating crucial factors such as greenhouse gas emissions and accessibility of integrated transit and non-motorized transport networks. The kick-off event attracted around 38 participants, including representatives from the government and various local and regional organizations, who displayed a strong interest in potential collaborations to achieve the project’s objectives.
Distinguished guests offer opening remarks at the kick-off event.
Subsequently, two days of capacity-building training on mapping transit were conducted by Transport for Cairo and Smart Solutech. These training courses equipped attendees, including representatives from the Lusaka City Council, with the necessary skills and knowledge to collect data and map transit in Lusaka using the Observer and RouteLab.
The kick-off event and capacity-building training exemplified the commitment of government institutions and stakeholders to address the transport sector’s significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Through collaboration and engagement with local stakeholders, substantial progress can be made in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport in Zambia. By developing policies and strategies that align with the community’s aspirations, a transport system can be established that acts as a catalyst for economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
Together, we embark on a transformative journey towards greener and more sustainable mobility in Lusaka, elevating the quality of life for residents while mitigating our impact on the planet!
