As part of the initial stage to map the public transport system of Alexandria, Egypt in a standard GTFS format, our project partner Transport for Cairo (TfC) held a capacity-building session for students at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT). The students will participate in the actual field research as data collectors using Observer and RouteLab – mobile and desktop applications developed by TfC for transit data collection and management.
The training aims at onboarding the students through creating comprehensive knowledge about digital data and its use for transport planning and analysis. The course was composed of both theoretical and practice sessions where students gain a hands-on experience in creating and interacting with transport data.
In the past few years, the DT4A project has demonstrated the importance of engaging academic institutions in transit data collection, mapping, and analysis to secure the sustainability of mapping efforts in cities across the continent.
