The DigitalTransport4Africa (DT4A) Webinar Series is a monthly webinar organized by WRI Africa and Global with DT4A consortium partners. The goal of the series is to facilitate knowledge exchange around public transport and data initiatives taking place in African cities and beyond, especially those undertaken by the consortium partners.

In Ghana, bicycles are the second most common means of transport for school children after walking. This webinar is structured in two parts. The first part briefly examines the availability of cycling infrastructure in the cities of Kumasi and Cape Coast using Open Street Map (OSM). The second part will delve into a recent study that employs a mixed-method approach to investigate the perception of safety among child cyclists in the two cities. Despite the perceived safety among school children, the inadequacy of cycling infrastructure creates a hazardous environment, discouraging the robust adoption of cycling for school commutes, despite its potential for health and time benefits. The webinar will conclude policy recommendations, such as aligning with the 2021 National Transport Policy and prioritizing active travel in accordance with Sustainable Development Goals 11.2 and 3.
